Brand Story & Vision
The Busted Cup is a Midwest craft brewery focused on personality, creativity, and approachability. Their brand prioritizes visual storytelling over rigid uniformity, allowing each beer to express its own identity while remaining recognizable on shelf. Through illustration-forward beer can design, the brewery aims to create memorable packaging that invites exploration, sparks conversation, and reflects the character of both the beer and the local community behind it.
Our Creative Process
We began by designing a flexible can badge and typographic hierarchy system that could scale across multiple beer styles while maintaining strong brand recognition. This foundational system established clear hierarchy, readability, and consistency across all SKUs. With the can system in place, we developed custom illustrated backgrounds for each beer, drawing inspiration from Midwest landscapes, local history, German beer traditions, and outlaw folklore. Each illustration was designed to integrate seamlessly beneath the badge and typography, ensuring visual impact without sacrificing clarity. Throughout the process, we optimized color, contrast, and linework to translate reliably to printed aluminum cans.

Project Summary & Results
The final beer can designs give The Busted Cup a cohesive, illustration-driven packaging system that stands out in both taproom and retail environments. Each SKU carries its own visual identity while remaining unified through a consistent badge and hierarchy system. The result is a scalable craft beer packaging design that strengthens shelf presence, supports future releases, and reinforces The Busted Cup’s creative, story-forward brand.
